Insurer, others attribute health care challenges to poor accountability

Experts in the health care sector, risks management, insurance and regulatory authorities have said lack of transparency, accountability and poor corporate governance remain the bane of Nigeria’s health sector.

A statement obtained on Sunday indicated that they said this at the third edition of the clinical risk and governance summit hosted by Conrad Clark Nigeria in Lagos under the theme ‘Clinical emergencies in Nigeria’.

The experts highlighted some of the problems as negligence of the management of accident victims, disease outbreak, poor response to general clinical emergencies by government, medical practitioners and regulatory bodies with outdated policies and poor governance.

The Head of Health and Life Operations at Continental Reinsurance Plc, Olaolu Omifare, while presenting a research paper on ‘Use of HMOs and insurance products in funding health care in Nigeria’, said that 71 per cent of the 5,000 respondents had heard about health insurance but over 52 per cent did not have any health insurance subscription.

He said there was a need for more health insurance coverage by the HMOs and government should make the scheme mandatory, improving regulation and exploring alternative funding.

Speaking on challenges of health care management in Nigeria, a former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, lamented poor finance management and lack of accountability in governance.

The Chief Executive Officer, Conrad Clark Nigeria, Joachim Adenusi, expressed worry about the poor governance structure in the health sector.

According to him, the result of a governance research conducted by Conrad Clark for the health sector showed that only 4.86 per cent of the hospitals in Lagos have governance structure and 3.54 per cent with risk management structure.

Adenusi called on all health stakeholders to play their roles effectively, manage uncertainties and increase productivity across the board.
