Bon Air Neighborhood association president looks to revitalization to spur growth
The Bon Air neighborhood was built in the 1950s, and it's located in the geographic center of Jefferson County. Over the years, the neighborhood's character has changed, but the new neighborhood association president, David Houvenagle, is working on some big ideas to revitalize this neighborhood."The Bon Air core, as I like to call it, at one time was a vibrant business core. Due to the economy of the area, the business aspect has declined," said Houvenagle. From Farnsley Park to the Bon Air Library, the neighborhood has a strong core of amenities, but Houvenagle has a big vision."If we don't upgrade the business activity aspect of it, it's going to become like a rotten apple core, which is going to have a negative effect on the neighborhood association as a whole," said Houvenagle. That vision for redevelopment starts at Farnsley Park."We conceive this performance stage as being a place for Shakespeare in the Park activities, local concert bands, kindergarten graduations, church services," said Houvenagle. Houvenagle says they're currently looking into prices for the development process to build the stage, which he hopes will attract people and businesses to the area."I'm a huge fan of the arts, and just allowing something like a stage or something out here where live performances can be happening and the community can be more involved, I think it's a wonderful idea," said Stephen King, a Bon Air resident. Houvenagle has already developed a strategic plan for the neighborhood revitalization. He knows what his neighborhood once was and what it could be again."We need to improve the Bon Air Manor area so we can keep the neighborhood a very desirable place to live and a safe place, too," said Houvenagle.
