Directors must act for the benefit of all, not just their shareholders

The recent Times’ investigation into the fast-fashion giant Boohoo’s shocking conduct in its warehouses was a horrifying insight into an industry riven with scandal. The conditions inside Boohoo’s warehouse in Burnley reveal the harsh brutal truths about an industry which often uses Victorian means of quickly producing cheap products in an age of click-of-a-button gratuity, all while paying out enormous bonuses to their leadership.

Still, this scandal is by no means an exception. The investigation comes after similar instances of business misconduct from both the fast-fashion industry and from across the wider business world, which together point to a new era of crisis for corporate governance.

From the P&O Ferries scandal, which saw the company fire 800 employees via a video link, to the
